This artwork by the French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme shows the famous Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope (404-323 BC) seated in his earthenware tub home in the public marketplace. He is surrounded by dogs. These are his companions and they symbolize his "Cynic" philosophy and austerity. Diogenes made a virtue of poverty. He was famous for his philosophical acts such as carrying a lighted lantern in order to search for an honest human being. ~ Jean-Léon Gérôme Gérôme painted Diogenes in 1860. It is an oil on canvas and is in the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.
