Degas painted this portrait of the American artist Mary Cassett and her dog in 1890, while she was living in France. Cassatt and Degas were friends and supporters of each other work. Mary Cassatt considered Edgar Degas her mentor. It is noted that Mary Cassatt purchased one of Edgar Degas's pastel drawings and also one of Claude Monet's works, and brought them with her when she traveled back to America. These became the first works of Impressionism to be seen in the United States. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He was one of the founders of Impressionism. Interestingly, he rejected being called an Impressionist, and preferred to be called a Realist.
