The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the largest, heaviest, and most expensive fighter aircraft in history to be powered by a single piston engine. It was armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns, four per wing. The P-47 ran a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine. The "Jug" had a service ceiling 43,000 feet, with a maximum speed 433 mph. 15,660 P-47`s were built.
