Athens is the capital of Greece. The city was also the center of Ancient Greece, a mighty empire and civilization, and is still dominated by monuments from the 5th century BC, such as the Acropolis, a mountaintop citadel filled with ancient buildings, such as the Parthenon temple and its many columns. The Acropolis Museum, together with the National Archeological Museum, preserves the sculptures, vases, jewelry and other relics of Ancient Greece.
