Let them know right away that you cannot understand them while they're wearing their masks. Unless you both enjoy the "scribble on the pad" game, which I personally do NOT, small things like this mask will not only alert them to our status but will often help to put them at a bit of ease, relax them somewhat, even make them smile. Yes, we're deaf. We don't have to be ticked-off about it ALL of the time. Strangers don't get that.
