Portrait of Michelangelo Antique Tile Reproduction
- from our Affiliates
Isaac Broome, an emigrant to the U.S. from Canada, was an inventor in the area of mechanized tile production as well as a sculptor, and one of the first major tile producers in the United States. Broome formed the Providential Tile Works after he left his position as chief designer for the Trent Tile Company in Newark, New Jersey, in 1885. This tile is his portrait of Michelangelo. Broome’s Michelangelo was copied and produced by most European tile companies, although the original was made by Trent. Although it looks like a 3-D carving, our reproduction is "Trompe l'oeil" (fool the eye) as this tile is flat.
