UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Santiago de Compostela (Old Town) / Ciudad vieja de Santiago de Compostela This famous pilgrimage site became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. The Palace of Rajoy is a neoclassical palace and it was completed in 1766. The site on which the palace was built was previously occupied by the prisons, the civil and ecclesiastical parts of the city, and a section of the wall, which defended the city from the west.
