UNESCO WHS Serie - Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) - 古都京都の文化財（京都市、宇治市、大津市） - Tenryu-ji (Tenryū Shiseizen-ji) 天龍寺 (天龍資聖禅寺) - Built in A.D. 794 on the model of the capitals of ancient China, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from its foundation until the middle of the 19th century. As the center of Japanese culture for more than 1‘000 years, Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens. The site contains 17 Historic locations. Tenryū-ji, more formally known as Tenryū Shiseizen-ji, is the head temple of the Tenryū branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Susukinobaba-chō, Ukyō Ward in Kyoto. The temple was founded by Ashikaga Takauji in 1339, primarily to venerate Gautama Buddha, and its first chief priest was Musō Soseki. As a temple related to both the Ashikaga family and Emperor Go-Daigo, the temple is held in high esteem, and is ranked number one among Kyoto's so-called Five Mountains.
