UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches / Casco antiguo de Ávila e iglesias extramuros Founded in the 11th century to protect the Spanish territories from the Moors, this «City of Saints and Stones» has kept its medieval austerity. This purity of form can still be seen in the Gothic cathedral and the fortifications which are the most complete in Spain. The construction of the Church of San Pedro began in 1100 and it is built in the romanesque style. Its main facade has a cistercian rose window. The church has three naves and a triple apse.
