Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. The Santiago de Compostela Archcathedral Basilica is the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. According to legend his tomb was rediscovered in 814. King Alfonso II of Asturias and Galicia (791–842) ordered the construction of a chapel on the site followed by the first church in 829. The construction of the present cathedral began in 1075 under the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile and the patronage of bishop Diego Peláez.
