UNESCO WHS Serie - Title: Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining - 明治日本の産業革命遺産 製鉄・製鋼、造船、石炭産業 Subtitle: The Imperial Steel Works, Japan - 旧官営八幡製鐵所関連施設 Description: The site encompasses a series of 23 component parts, mainly located in the southwest of Japan. It bears testimony to the rapid industrialization of the country from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century, through the development of the iron and steel industry, shipbuilding and coal mining. The site illustrates the process by which feudal Japan sought technology transfer from Europe and America from the middle of the 19th century and how this technology was adapted to the country’s needs and social traditions. The Meiji Government made the decision to build the Imperial Steel Works in the small village in Yawata, next to the sea and close to the coal-rich Chikuho area. It was essential for both military and domestic use. The inauguration of the Imperial Steel Works in 1901 marked the beginning of a major phase in Japanese iron and steel technology.
