Glacier-clad peaks interspersed with extensive alpine meadows are surrounded by an extensive old growth forest, among which is the best example of intact and protected temperate rainforest in the Pacific Northwest. The Olympic Mountains are a mountain range on the Olympic Peninsula. A large portion of the range is contained within the Olympic National Park. The Hoh Rainforest is one of the largest temperate rainforests in the United States. Within Olympic National Park, the forest is protected from commercial exploitation. This includes 24 miles (39 km) of low elevation forest along the Hoh River. The Hoh River valley was formed thousands of years ago by glaciers.
