St. Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Avila) (1515-1582): Born in Avila, Spain. Foundress of the reformed (Discalced) Carmelites. St. Teresa reached the heights of spiritual perfection and was granted mystical revelations. She wrote books on the spiritual life, for which she was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
