Many Uyghurs live in East Turkestan. Uyghurs speak the Uyghur language and are generally Muslim. By the 20th century they made up the vast majority of the population. In 1933 and 1944 attempts were made to declare an independent republic, but the first of these collapsed and the second was absorbed into People's Republic of China in 1949. Pro-independence groups maintain that this constitutes an illegal occupation.
