Orangutans exist in the wild on only two islands -Borneo and Sumatra. These endangered great apes are intelligent and gentle, known for their luxurious red hair. In this photo, Tom, king of the jungle in Kalimantan (Indonesia Borneo), exposes this massive arms as he waits by the food storage bin of Orangutan Foundation International. Camp Leakey in Tanjung Putting National Park was developed in the 1970's when UCLA doctoral student, Dr. Birute Galdikas arrived as one of 3 women chosen by Dr. Louis Leakey to study the great apes. (Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall went to Africa to study mountain gorillas and chimps, respectively.) In the background, a famous female orangutan named Siswe peacefully enjoys some fruit. The artist is a member and active volunteer with OFI in this location and donates her profits to the conservation efforts to save this species of wildlife from extinction.
