Compassion (1897) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (Style: Academicism) Compassion is a painting by French academic painter William Adolphe Bouguereau. The painting shows Jesus Christ hanging on the cross, with an older man standing next to him carrying a large cross. The man can be interpreted as a representation of humankind, as he hugs the fragile body of Christ. The painting is not a reference to any passages in the Bible. Bouguereau was particularly proud of Compassion and presented it twice: at the Salon des Artistes français (French artists fair) in 1897, and at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
