The wolf (Canis lupus), also known as the gray wolf or grey wolf, is native to North America. In the continental United States, wolf declines were caused by the expansion of agriculture and the decimation of the wolf's main prey species like the American bison. Given protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, they have returned to parts of their former range due to both natural recolonizations and reintroductions. Wolf populations can be found in the Great Lakes states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Wolves also occupy much of the northern Rocky Mountains region, including Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. They have also established populations in Washington and Oregon.
