This design features a painting by the English artist James Ward (1769–1859), who specialized in depicting animals. It depicts the famous war horse owned by Napoleon I of France. The animal was named after the Battle of Marengo, which took place in Northern Italy; the horse carried his rider safely through the dangers of that battle. The horse is depicted here in a barren landscape with a beautiful sunset in the distance, creating an atmospheric scene on the horizon. The original artwork was painted by James Ward in 1824.
