This design features a watercolor painting by the American artist Winslow Homer (1836–1910), who had lived for two years in the English coastal village of Cullercoats. It shows three young girls who are engaged in the traditional work of fishing along the rugged coastline. The girls are standing on a rocky shoreline, overlooking the crashing waves of the sea. They are dressed in simple, weather-worn clothing, which emphasizes their connection with the natural environment. They are holding nets and baskets in their hands, ready to collect the fish, but for now they are chatting on the shore. By depicting these young girls in a rugged and demanding coastal setting, Homer emphasizes their strength, resilience and connection to the sea. The women are from Tynemouth, which is a coastal town in the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside, in North East England; it was historically part of the county of Northumberland. The original art was painted by Winslow Homer in 1881.
