Wounded Warrior by Elisabeth Jerichau_Baumann Stone Coaster Affiliate icon

This design features a painting by the Polish-Danish artist Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann (1819–1881). It depicts a wounded Danish soldier recovering in bed. He has a bandage on his head and his arm is tied in a sling, which suggests that it may have been broken in combat. The soldier has a bushy beard. There is a young lady sitting on the side of the bed with him: she is holding his hand and reading to him from a book, perhaps the Bible. The wounded soldier appears to be in pain, but he is trying to hide his suffering, because he is strong and resilient. The presence of the young woman is clearly comforting for him. On the table next to the soldier's bed is a cup of tea and a red rose, which may have been given to him by the woman as a sign of her love and respect for him. The original artwork was painted in 1865.
