Bush Lily (Clivi Miniata) ukiyo-e print by Tanigami Konan 谷上廣南, published by Unsodo c1917-1918. Digitally enhanced from a 1917 edition of Seiyō sōka zufu 西洋草花図譜 or A Picture Album of Western Plants and Flowers. --- The Bush Lily is a South African flower that is poisonous if ingested. It is prized as an ornamental flower. Some widely used names for the flower are considered deeply offensive and hateful in South Africa--so, stick with Bush Lily. --- "Konan Tanigami was a nihonga painter and printmaker best known for his kacho-e, or “bird-and-flower pictures.” Born in Hyogo Prefecture, he produced five known print albums of Western flowers that were published by the Kyoto-based Unsodo c. 1917-1918. Titled A Picture Album of Western Plants and Flowers (Seiyo Soka Zofu), the series is organized by season. In 1917, Konan produced a series of 24 peony prints for the Teiten (imperial exhibition). Konan’s floral designs were published in three volumes as A Book of Flower Shapes and Forms in 1923 and 1926.”- From the Ronin Gallery --- Ukiyo-e is an iconic era, ‘method’ and esthetic of Japanese woodblock printing. It is more than an art movement or art form--it was depicted monumental social changes which it then began in feed into, becoming the zeitgeist it had previously chased. But these works, called kacho-e, are not closely related to social change, quite the opposite it is a very old Chinese tradition—Bird and Flower paintings. Though they are 'Western' flowers and plants, they remain rather traditional fare. But these prints are undeniably stunning and outstanding pieces of art. --- Today, Unsodo, who printed Tanigami’s works, is the last remaining publisher of woodblock prints in all of Japan.
