The first African American military aviators to serve the United States armed forces. The 332nd Fighter Group and 99th Fighter Squadron took part in Operation Torch over Sicily, Italy during World War 2. 332nd also was made of mostly Black navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel. the American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government.
