The Headless Horseman's Eternal Flame --- The Headless Horseman was a fearsome sight, but even the most terrifying specter needs a well-lit path. Unlike the flickering candle most jack-o'-lanterns rely on, the Horseman's possessed a constant, eerie glow. The secret? The Altar of Embers. --- Legends whispered of a hidden clearing deep within the haunted forest. In its center stood a crumbling stone structure, its purpose lost to time. But the Horseman knew. This was no mere ruin; it was the Altar of Embers. Etchings on the weathered stones depicted a fiery ritual, hinting at the altar's forgotten power. --- On the eve of Halloween, the Horseman would ride to the clearing. With a flick of his spectral wrist, the stones would groan and shift, revealing a hidden pit. Deep within, embers glowed with an unnatural heat, fueled not by wood or coal, but by a nameless, infernal energy. The Horseman would carefully place his jack-o'-lantern on a designated stone slab above the pit. As it touched the heat, a surge of energy would crackle, and the pumpkin's eyes would flare with an unnatural orange light. The carved grin seemed to widen, a silent thank you for the eternal flame it craved. --- Fueled by the Altar's dark magic, the jack-o'-lantern would burn all night, casting an ominous glow on the Horseman's path. Villagers, catching a glimpse of the spectral rider and his ever-burning lantern, would huddle deeper within their homes, forever haunted by the legend of the Headless Horseman and his fiery beacon. --- Image taken by Benjamin Balazs and put in Creative Commons CC0.
