Chief Wawatam, a railroad car ferry, was built in Toledo in 1911 and carried mostly railroad cars across the Straits of Mackinac. She also had a side hustle as an icebreaker, and had the bow-mounted propeller that was once thought de rigeuer for the job. Two distinctions: Last surviving hand-fired, coal-powered steamship on the Lakes, and last operating survivor of the Great Storm of 1913. She ended her days as a barge. Shown here late in life.
