This postcard features the Hawai`i State Capitol in Honolulu, Hawai`i. It houses the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, offices of state legislators, and the chambers of the state House and Senate. Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1969. It has an unusual architectural style which contains symbolism reflecting the uniqueness of the island state. Architects designed it with extensive amounts of open space, both inside and out, to convey a sense of open government. To signify the eight major Hawaiian islands, thee number eight is found throughout the building, There are eight columns in the front and back of the building, groups of eight mini-columns on the balcony that surrounds the fourth floor and eight panels on the doors leading to the Governor’s and Lieutenant Governor’s chambers. The peaks of the Koʻolau mountains are visible in the background. Enjoy your new Hawaii State Capitol Postcard!
