In Killarney National Park, Ireland, you'll find one of the major ecclesiastical sites, Muckross Abbey. In 1448, it was founded as a Franciscan friary for the Observantine Franciscans by Donal McCarthy Mor. Its history has been a violent one and it has been damaged and reconstructed several times. The friars had to endure raids and Cromwellian forces under Lord Ludlow persecuted them. Today, although the abbey is mostly roofless, it is generally very well preserved. It is the burial place of many prominent Irish poets. Access to Muckross Abbey is free and it is open year round. Enjoy your new Muckross Abbey Killarney National Park Ireland Postcard !
