This postcard features the Panch Mahal and Ornamental Pool in Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India. Fatehpur Sikri briefly served as the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 during the reign of Emperor Akbar. "Panch Mahal means "five level palace". The stunning Panch Mahal, a towering five-story building consisting of a network of open archways, operates as Fatehpur Sikri’s centrepiece. Ornate sandstone structures creep around a central square, at the centre of which perfectly manicured lawns entwine with deep red sandstone pathways. In one of the outer squares of the citadel is the marble tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti. The pool in front of the Panch Mahal is called the Anoop Talab. It would have been filled with water, save for the bridge, and would have been the setting for musical concerts and other entertainment.
