In the Olden Days, names were given to persons and objects alike. Naming a sword or a place marked its place within the order of things, very much like naming a person joined him or her to a cultural setting, an identification, a lineage. The great nameless void was the realm of the Devil. Stillborn children were given names to mark them for the realm beyond. Chaos was defined by namelessness. Yet, the Dark Arts took advantage of this. As someone or something named could be taken possession of. This led to a kind of layering, the introduction of secret or true names in place of those known to the uninitiated. Only knowledge of a thing´s or person´s true name enabled the magician to put a spell on that particular target. A tradition that is echoed in the Church´s use of clerical names to replace inherited and given names. Above and below this abode of mere mortals, God and the Devil were known by many names and thus, as moving targets, untouchable to magic. In Japan, the rōnin were samurais without a lord, not attached to a name. Not having a name, in all cultures, was the mark of the outcast. Yet, Chaos is the beginning of Everything. The Hindu goddess Kali is the destroyer and life-giver. She is the Ultimate Reality, the personification of the Present, an explosion of destruction and creation. The Sine Nomine – the Nameless - are her children, those that don´t conform and, instead, invent their own conventions. Those that fear not and kneel not and have, yet, no names. The Moment, the Present, is their time. They shape and create and invent. They forge their own new warriors´ code.
