One of Chicago's most famous icons are the bronze lions that stand guard over the entrance to the Art Institute located on Michigan Ave. The building was built for the 1893 Columbian Exposition and was used to host lectures and other fair events which took place almost eight miles south of downtown Chicago. They are the work of Edward Kemeys, a self-taught artist and the nation's first great animalier or sculptor of animals, the lion pair was unveiled on May 10, 1894.
