Although the name implies a focus on the stars, it is really the reflection on the river of the gaslight from the gas lamps that dominates the image. Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was probably the most famous Post-Impressionist painter. Never enjoying a great level of success or recognition during his life, his posthumous stature has grown enormously, and he has arguably influenced almost every artist since.
