Harlequin and Columbine (c. 1886) by Edgar Degas is a vintage impressionist fine art drama painting featuring the ballerina Columbine with the Harlequin. The Harlequin is the comic of the show. He is a servant and the love interest of Columbine. Columbine is a lovely woman, who has caught the eye of Harlequin. Harlequinade is a type of theatrical performance piece which dates back to Italy in the 16th century. The story revolves around the lives of its five main characters: Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, Clown, and Pantaloon. About the artist: Edgar Degas (1834-1917) is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he preferred realism and to be called a realist. Degas is especially identified with the subject of ballet dance, and over half his works depict dancers.
