At the Opera (aka At the Francais, a Sketch) (1878-79) by Mary Cassatt is a vintage impressionism fine art portrait painting featuring the artist's sister. In the background you can see another audience member looking at Lydia through his opera glasses. Lydia is sitting in a box, or loges, at the Opera looking forward, presumably at another member of the audience instead of down at the performance. About the artist: Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844-1926) was an American Impressionist painter who often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
