V8 symbol, detail photo of chrome V8 on a vintage car. V8 stands for eight-cylinder V configuration engine. The patent for the V8 was taken out in 1902. At first this engine was used in a boat, owned by the patent holder. Then he was approached by aviation representatives who wanted to put V8 engines in planes, which were still in experimental stages at the time. In France the V8 came into use as a race car and airplane engine in 1904. Soon major car manufacturers showed interest in this engine and eventually it caught on. By the latter half of the century, the V8 was in full use for racing and regular use vehicles. The V8 faded from the public eye due to such environmental factors such as gas consumption - V8 engine is known as a gas guzzler - and was replaced by smaller, compact engines that fit into smaller compact cars as the trend moved to saving the environment from depleted natural resources, automobile emissions and pollution. I took this photo at a vintage car show recently. I like the way the sunlight shines and glows on the chrome. There are some muddy water spatters on the body of the car which add a dynamic sense of motion, a feeling of travel, a road trip. The first American V8 came out in 1914, and was being mass produced by 1917. Over the next decades, the V8 was continually in development as car manufacturers throughout the globe made improvements and changes and took each other to court. V8's are generally used now in racing cars, sports cars, muscle cars and light trucks. Original photo Sylvia Rose, Canada. Visit me on Twitter @Sylvia_FineArt. Happy trails.
