Here's a wonderful photographic image, detail of green lichen on the bark of a tree, taken on a lovely rainy day when the moisture helps bring out the abundant colors. A close-up image, this artwork shows the natural texture of the tree and lichen, ridges, cracks, shapes, colors and character of the rugged tree bark with its pretty cloak of lichen. Lichen facts and trivia: lichen is all around us and easy to take for granted ... but once you start looking at it, you find out how amazing this natural organism is. Lichen can grow almost anywhere, a living example of the miracles of nature. It loves the bark of trees. Mosses and lichens look similiar but they’re not related. Moss is a true plant that extracts nutrients from soil and other substrates. Lichen is not a plant nor an animal; it's the product of a relationship between algae and a fungus, two separate entities which exist interactively to become a third unique entity; in a way, lichen is the love child of algae and fungus. There are many lichen varieties, depending on the particular types of algae and fungus that comprise it. Reindeer lichen, for instance, is gray and curly and you can eat it if you're ever lost in the woods. The green species often found on trees is a foliose lichen. It grows on the bark but is not harmful to the tree, in fact giving some protection. It’s self-sufficient, creating its own food through photosynthesis, and uses its tree host mainly as a place to live. Lichen is one of the oldest-lived organisms in the world and appears in almost any habitat, from jungle to savanna, equatorial regions to the arctic tundra. It can even grow inside solid rock, or free floating in air. This is just one of the many commonly overlooked but absolutely amazing organisms that inhabit our natural environment. This design is great for naturalists, environmentalists, your favorite tree huggers, outdoor enthusiasts, fans of the forest, anyone who loves the world of nature and the look of natural organic textures.
