To justify the candy, the church choirmaster asked the candymaker to put hooks on the ends of the candy sticks, thus resembling shepherds' crooks and relating to the nativity scene. This account may or may not be true, as it can't really be verified. Candy canes were first recorded in association with Christmas in 1874, and were first hung on Christmas trees about that time.
