A great souvenir of our beautiful country Canada! This keepsake design features the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa Ontario, viewed from the north shore of the Ottawa River in Vieux Hull, Gatineau, Quebec. On the other side of this mug you have the word "Canada" in cool script style font, and a red maple leaf. The maple leaf is a symbol of Canada and appears at the center of the red and white Canadian flag. The Parliament Buildings sit on Parliament Hill, a limestone outcropping overlooking the river. This is actually the back of the Center Block, with a fantastic view of the Parliamentary Library. The Library is done in Late Victorian architectural style. It was the only building of the centre block to survive a major fire in 1900. The rest of the buildings were rebuilt in neo Gothic or Gothic revival architecture styles. The roofs of all buildings are copper, which corrodes upon exposure to air and creates the lovely green roofs. Note the roof of the Library is dark brown, as it was recently cleaned; before long it will acquire the corroded copper finish as well. The tall Peace Tower presides over the other buildings. It was the last of Centre Block to be rebuilt, in 1927, and features fancy intricate carvings in sandstone, a huge clock facing four ways, and of course the Canadian Flag at top. If you visit the Parliament Buildings I'd advise you to take one of the free tours which explain history, architecture and political structure of Canada. The Peace Tower honors Canadians who were killed in battle. You can see snow on the ground. This picture was taken in the month of March by local artist M Sylvia Chaume. This is a great souvenir or travel keepsake of Canada, Quebec or Ottawa, for yourself or someone else special in your life. Peace all!
