Art by Mother Nature! This is a photo image of green lichen on the bark of a tree, taken on a pleasant rainy day. It's a close-up image showing the ridges, cracks, forms of the natural tree bark and the texture and colors of the lichen. Lichen is a truly amazing organism. It can grow almost anywhere and is a living example of natural symbiotic beauty. Although lichens resemble mosses, they’re not related. Moss is a true plant which extracts nutrients from soil and other substrates. Lichen is actually a relationship between algae and a fungus, two separate entities which exist harmoniously to become a third unique entity, lichen, which is more than the sum of its parts. There are many different types of lichen, depending on the types of algae and fungus that comprise it. Reindeer lichen, for instance, is gray and curly and you can eat it if you're ever lost in the woods. This green species is a leafy foliose lichen. The lichen grows on the bark but is not harmful to the tree. It’s self-sufficient, creating its own food through photosynthesis, and uses its tree host mainly as a place to live. Lichen is one of the oldest-lived organisms in the world and are found in almost any habitat, from rain forests to deserts, tropics to arctic regions. It can even grow inside solid rock, or free floating in air. This is just one of the many commonly overlooked but absolutely amazing organisms that inhabit our natural environment. This design is great for boyfriend, son or husband, naturalists, environmentalists, your favorite tree huggers, outdoor enthusiasts, fans of the forest, anyone who loves the look of natural textures and the beauty of nature. Original photo M Sylvia Chaume, taken in Jacques Cartier Park, city of Gatineau (Hull), right across the river from Ottawa, Canada.
