Lichen is not harmful to trees at all, and basically just uses the tree as a place to live and grow. Unlike moss, which is a true plant, lichen is a relationship between algae and fungus. There are many different kinds of lichen depending on the type of algae and fungus involved, and other factors like the density of fungal filaments. Lichen is self-sufficient, obtaining food purely through photosynthesis, and is one of the most amazing environmental organisms we can find right under our collective nose. Most types of lichen are edible by humans and many animals eat it too, for example reindeer lichen which commonly forms on rocks is gray, wavy looking. You can eat it if you get yourself lost in the woods or you're out on a wilderness trek and get the munchies. I took this photo during a mild rain shower and the dampness enhances the colors of lichen and bark.
