LavaLava was inspired by Polynesian fashion & culture with beautiful tropical floras bursting into bloom. History & technology has modified the lavalavas into cotton fabrics from their original materials of pandanus leaves. It is still worn & displayed with island pride. Before WWII, the most prestigious lavalava were made by wrapping the body with fine mats (finely woven textiles of leaves) (tapa cloth) pounded from paper mulberry or wild hibiscus bark. Some traditional lavalavas were made with flower petals, leaves, feathers & seashells tied to a wrap-around backing of plaited plant fibers. Acrylic on Canvas
