âµ£, called yaz, is a letter of the Berber alphabet, the tifinagh. It represents the neighboring alveolar fricative consonant /z/. This letter was originally preserved as symbols of the Amazigh root regions of the Canary Islands to Egypt and later became a symbol letter for the cultural cause of Amazigh and was taken over when the Amazigh flag was created by activists from those regions. It then generalized to the bereavers of North Africa as a whole.1
