Gaspar de Crayer arranged a few pictures of Philip IV, likely charged by the Marqués de Leganés, who filled in as Philip's messenger to the Spanish court in Brussels in 1627-28. Here the youthful lord of Spain is introduced in an eminently enhanced Flemish rangers reinforcement. He holds an officer's cudgel in his right hand and wears a luxurious blade to his left side hip. The organization follows an example in Spanish likeness of portraying rulers in fine protection, which was laid out many years sooner by Titian, for instance in his pictures of Sovereign Charles V and Lord Philip II.
