Santa Monica Airport was the site of the first National Women's Air Derby in 1929. Women were not allowed to compete against the men and even in their own air derby the horse power of their aircraft was limited so that no woman could set a speed record greater than a man's. Will Rogers nick named the race the "Powder Puff Derby". Amelia Earhart, Phoebe Omlie, Bobbie Trout, Pancho Barnes, and Louise Thaden were some of the twenty women competitors.
