Cooper Donuts vintage retro distrressed. Cooper Donuts was a donut shop located in Los Angeles that became significant in the history of LGBTQ+ rights. In the 1950s, the donut shop was a popular gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community, who were often subject to police harassment and violence. On May 1959, police officers raided Cooper Donuts, arresting several patrons who were cross-dressing or engaging in same-sex acts. This sparked a spontaneous protest and riot, with the patrons and supporters throwing donuts, coffee cups, and trash at the police. The police responded with violence, beating and arresting more people. This event is considered one of the earliest instances of LGBTQ+ resistance against police brutality in the United States, and it inspired other protests and uprisings such as the Stonewall riots in New York City a decade later. Although the donut shop is no longer in business, a plaque commemorating the Cooper Donuts riot was installed in 2017 at the location where it once stood, at the corner of Main and Winston Streets in Los Angeles.
