In 9 CE, Varus, the Roman emperor Augustus’s general in Germany, lost three legions in the Teutoburg Forest. German tribes, led by Arminius, attacked the legions and halted Roman expansion across the Rhine river. It is said that Augustus was so distraught, he walked around his imperial palace shouting: "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!"
