The Kiss 1898 woman _ Art Nouveau _ Illustration Button Affiliate icon

Peter Behrens worked as a painter, illustrator and bookbinder in an artisanal fashion. He frequented the bohemian circles and was interested in subjects related to the reform of lifestyles. The Kiss (Kuss in German) is one of the best known of all Jugendstil prints and the most important by Peter Behrens. Two women share a kiss, the art shows just their heads with their eyes closed, heads turned a bit with their hair stylized wildly mixed flowing both above and below their heads. The provocative image is characteristic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The emphasis on curvilinear, organic forms, exemplified here by the intertwined locks of hair, is a motif the artist might have known from an 1898 Edvard Munch woodcut, Man’s Head in Woman’s Hair (Willoch 89).
