"HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE: On Earth and in Space" Since its beginning, the space program astronauts corps was primarily made up of military test pilots. In 1967 that began to change with the selection of scientists. The advent of the shuttle program increased those kinds of opportunities, though military pilots still had the task of piloting and commanding shuttle missions. The designs were made in consultation with astronauts from each service branch. I incorporated appropriate colors for each patch. These designs are INSPIRED by the official Seal of each Service Branch but I diligently avoided using any copyright protected symbols or iconography. The Air Force Tribute patch depicts the view of the Earth as seen reflected in a spacewalking astronaut visor. Inside the shield is Ed White, the first American to perform a spacewalk. An American Bald Eagle looks towards the past in tribute to the USAF veterans who served throughout the history of our space programs. The icons along the bottom border depict the programs Air Force astronauts have and will participate in.
