CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF APOLLO-11 This very ambitious montage attempts to honor all of those who were involved in the effort to "land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth." The inner bottom panel showcases the flight of Freedom 7 which led President Kennedy to issue the challenge. Then clockwise is the launch of Gemini 3, the first American spacewalk, the rendezvous of Gemini 7 & 6, the first docking of Gemini 8 and the success of all goals together during Gemini 12. The last inner panel pays tribute to the Apollo-1 crew whose sacrifice ensured the success of the Apollo Program. The outer ring of panels highlight the critical steps of Apollo 7, 8, 9 and 10 that had to be accomplished before an landing could be attempted. The launch, landing, moonwalk and splashdown of Apollo 11 fill the outer ring. The center patch shows the descent stage of the Lunar Module and U.S. Flag at Tranquility Base.
