HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE On Earth and in Space T_Shirt Affiliate icon

From the Private Collection of Tim Gagnon, aka "The Patch Guy." "HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE: On Earth and in Space" Since its beginning, the space program astronauts corps was primarily made up of military test pilots. In 1967 that began to change with the selection of scientists. The advent of the shuttle program increased those kinds of opportunities, though military pilots still had the task of piloting and commanding shuttle missions. The designs were made in consultation with astronauts from each service branch. I incorporated appropriate colors for each patch. These designs are INSPIRED by the official Seal of each Service Branch but I diligently avoided using any copyright protected symbols or iconography. The Coast Guard Tribute alternative patch depicts an American Bald Eagle, crossed anchors behind a red, white and blue shield above the Earth as seen from space. The shield style is similar to the "racing stripe" livery of CG ships and is offered as an alternative design at the specific request of a CG veteran who is a friend. The shield has the Roman Numeral "1990" on it in tribute to the first "Coastie" to fly in space: Cmdr. Bruce Melnick, USCG (ret). The three stars in the shield pay tribute to the three USCG Academy graduates who became astronauts The Shuttle, ISS, Commercial Crew and Artemis icons represent the programs that Coast Guard veterans have and will participate in.
