APPEAL TO HEAVEN Pine Tree Flag USA 1775 American Religious T-shirt - This replica of the original drawing of the 1775 Appeal to Heaven flag is is also called the "Pine Tree Flag" or the "Washington's Cruisers Flag." It was established to fly over a fleet of six ships commissioned by George Washington to be used to capture British supplies and ammunition. The motto is taken from British philosopher John Locke from 1690 as part of Two Treatises of Government refuting the theory of the divine right of kings: "And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment." The pine tree symbolizes peace in that the leaders of five Indian nations buried their weapons under a pine tree. Colonists adopted the symbol as a sign of peace, as well as independence.
