Carp streamers (koinobori) fly below the iconic Tokyo Tower in celebration of Children's Day (Kodomo no hi) on May 5th. Traditionally, streamers were flown from homes to honor sons, the carp symbolizing energy, strength and determination. In modern Japan, however, the carp streamers are flown for both sons and daughters.
